Truck..err Studio Shoot Corner    By Dave King

“…and coming to studio in five, four, three, two, (one)…cue host!”

Just a few words to get the reader pumped up on public affairs programming!

Tune in to Channel 21 and you will notice two CTV-21 public affairs programs going strong. Local Edition, hosted by Phyllis Cortese, and In Your Community, hosted by John Hatch. These shows are produced and directed by the CommuniTyVision 21 staff and crewed by CTV-21 interns.

Maintaining a series timeslot, each show is produced twice a month with subject matter varying from local maple syrup demonstrations to non-profit organizations to recycling awareness. As you can see, topics are tailored towards the here-and-now of the community. If the topic generates local interest and is most-likely bypassed by the larger news stations, CTV-21 public affairs programming can be there to cover it!

"In Your Community" Host John Hatch interviews Frank Galterio as a preview to the Kent Film Festival 2007

CommuniTyVision21 volunteers were on location at the Kent Film Festival

Let’s look back at a topic that holds near and dear to the hearts of many video and film enthusiasts, the Kent Film Festival (March 29 th to April 1 st). Local Edition and In Your Community had a large role in covering this event. A Local Edition episode was produced and cablecast prior to the event, featuring director of festival, Frank Galterio, and highlighted clips from last year’s film entries. An In Your Community episode covered on-location highlights and interviews as well as another guest appearance from Frank to recap the event.

On-location B-Roll and interviews were captured through the collaborative efforts of CTV-21 staff and interns. (Quick fact: B-Roll in this case refers to footage shot that isn't the main action, to be used later rolled-in or inserted over segments of the program’s studio interview, which illustrates or shows examples of what is being discussed.) We were equipped with three cameras; two to get B-Roll and one for field interviews.

Capturing interviews provided the crew with a good challenge. Staying focused on potential interviewees and being aggressive enough to politely snatch them from their busy schedule was essential (thanks Beth, for getting us Campbell Scott!). Also, thanks to John Hatch and Tim Washer for hosting the field interviews and thanks to CTV-21 interns for your steady hand.

After a productive weekend in the quaint little center of Kent CT, we came back with some great footage, and a week later the studio segments were completed. As we wrap up these particular episodes, we are already in the preproduction stages of the next Local Edition and In Your Community.

So, tune in to these CTV-21 public affairs programs and you’ll get the inside scoop on your community. Where else can you be informed on great local news and events that can literally be found in your backyard? (we produced a show on Maple Syrup, so if you have a maple tree in your back yard, well…) Local Edition can be seen on CTV-21 Sundays at 4:00 PM and Tuesdays at 8:00 PM. Directly following is In Your Community, Sundays at 4:30 PM and Tuesdays at 8:30 PM.
